Gummy Smile

Gummy Smile

What is a gummy smile?

A gummy smile is a condition where a significant portion of the gum above the upper teeth is exposed when smiling. This can result from hyperactive facial muscles, a short upper lip, small tooth size, or other anatomical features. Ideally, about 3/4 of the dental crown should be visible when smiling, but with a gummy smile (also known as a gingival smile), the gums are excessively exposed, which can lead to discomfort and a lack of confidence in one's smile.

Causes of a gummy smile

A gummy smile can be caused by various factors, including:

Hyperactivity of the facial muscles

when smiling, they contract excessively, lifting the upper lip higher than normal.

Short or hypermobile upper lip

some people have a congenital predisposition to a shorter lip, resulting in greater gum visibility.

Small upper teeth

due to gingival hypertrophy, the teeth appear smaller, which enhances the gummy smile effect.

Excessive development of the maxillary bone

this can be caused by genetics, mouth breathing, or childhood habits such as thumb sucking.

Gummy smile correction with botulinum toxin

One of the most effective and minimally invasive methods for correcting a gummy smile is the use of botulinum toxin (Botox). By injecting Botox into the muscles responsible for lifting the upper lip, their activity is reduced, resulting in a more aesthetic and balanced smile.

When is the procedure recommended?

If more than 2 mm of the gum is exposed when smiling.

If the upper lip thins significantly when smiling.

If you desire a more harmonious ratio between lips, teeth, and gums.

How Does the Procedure Work?

The effect begins to appear after a few days, and the final result is visible within 10–14 days. If necessary, a follow-up correction can be made, which in most cases is included in the price of the procedure.

Preparation

the skin is cleansed and a local anesthetic may be applied for minimal discomfort.

Injection

the botulinum toxin is injected with a fine needle into specific points of the muscles that lift the upper lip.

After the procedure

it is not recommended to lie down or bend over for the first 3–4 hours. Avoid exercise, alcohol, and aggressive cosmetic products for the first 24 hours.

How long does the result last?

The duration of the effect depends on the individual characteristics of the patient, but results typically last between 4 and 6 months, after which the procedure can be repeated.

Contraindications

Pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Local infections in the treated area.

Malignant diseases.

Certain autoimmune diseases.
